MOOK LION
is one of Durban’s finest street artists.
My first brush with Mookie’s work was during his Still
Free campaign which saw wheat pastes, posters and murals placed throughout
the city of Durban. In fact it was Still Free that inspired me start
the Canvas
City feature on my blog.
Raised in an artistic family Mook started his career
as a graffiti artist at the age of 16 and later went on to study fine art at
the Durban University of Technology. His art is provocative and beautifully
executed. Inspired by artists such as Blu, Faith 47, Jace, Picasso and Van Gogh,
Mook can also be likened to the legendary street artist Banksy.
I absolutely love his vibrant style and use of colour.
It really makes his work stand out and feel alive. You can check out some of
his work yourself at the Alliance Franchise, Hope Street
in Morningside, Baxter Avenue in Berea, Berea Park, and the Beach front.
Most of the Still Free wheat pastes have disappeared
but there are still some surviving in Glenwood, Tollgate and Warwick Junction.
