My Festival Bucket List

| |
Tomorrowland: Belgium
Tomorrowland is the biggest EDM festival in the world. Held annually in the town of Boom, close to Antwerp, in Belgium, the festival has been going strong since 2005 featuring the world’s top EDM producers and DJ’s. You haven’t lived until you dance, trance and prance your way around the fantasy world of Tomorrowland.

Holi One Festival: India
Holi is a religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus as a festival of colours. Although I have been to a similar version in SA it was more of an EDM party and I still want to observe the original festival in India which is a spiritual celebration.

Festival of Lights: Berlin, Germany
For one or two weeks, well-known sights like Brandenburg Gate, Fernsehturm, Berlin Cathedral or Berlin Victory Column are illuminated by the most incredible light art.

The Cannabis Cup: Amsterdam
The High Times Cannabis Cup is the world’s preeminent Cannabis festival. Founded in 1987 by Steven Hager, the High Times Cannabis Cup is held each November in Amsterdam. And whilst you are enjoying the…er…coffee shops and tourist attractions be sure to pay my favourite artist a visit at the Van Gogh museum.

Burning Man Festival: Black Rock Desert, Nevada
Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance.  This is an arts festival like no other and it’s impossible to fully describe the event to you. Simply, you have to experience it. Past themes have included Fertility, Time, Hell, Outer Space, The Body, The Floating World, Beyond Belief, Vault of Heaven, Psyche, Hope and Fear, The Green Man, The American Dream, Evolution, Metropolis and Fertility 2.0. The theme for 2013 is Cargo Cult.

Harbin International Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival: China
Definitely one of the coolest festivals out there, the Harbin International Ice & Snow festival is an epic undertaking that has historically involved intricately carved ice Buddha’s, towering pagodas, crazy ice slides, and even crazier visitors taking a quick plunge in the frigid waters of the nearby Songhua River (where the ice blocks are harvested). The pop-up landscape is especially breathtaking at night, when the glassy-clear sculptures are lit up with both neon lasers and traditional lanterns.

Diwali Festival of Lights: India
Diwali, the Festival of Light, comes at the end of October or early November. It's a festival that Hindus and Jains celebrate. The most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil"

Sandfest: Port Aransas, Texas
The Texas Sandfest is one of the largest sand sculpting festivals in the world. The event draws some of the biggest names in Sand Art and is held over three days. It is also run by a non-profit organization and all proceeds go to charities. So not only a good time, but a helping hand as well.

Rio Carnival: Brazil
The Rio Carnival is the world’s biggest festival with a daily attendance of 2 million! Its an explosion of colour, music, floats and festivities and an absolute MUST on any festival goes bucket list.

Mardi Gras: International
Also known as Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras is the biggest piss up dress up act up festival the world over. Popular practices include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. What could go wrong?
