THE WHEEL HOUSE

The Wheel House is a live street performance by two acrobatic entertainers who move a circular stage around public spaces entertaining audiences with their highly technical and masterfully skilled performances.

The interior of the wheel is designed to look like a house, with doors, windows, curtains and a small kitchen. The characters, dressed as hobos, carry out daily household tasks whilst moving the wheel along a road to nowhere. The performance is scored by the creaking wheel and accompanied by an audio soundtrack.

The Wheel House Street Theatre

Produced by the Acrojou Circus Theatre in 2006 The Wheel House is an ingenious piece of street theatre and something I would love to see live! Thus far it has been performed before over 60,000 people in nine countries.

The Wheel House Street Theatre
Acrojou Circus Theatre describes the piece as, "Theatrical acrobatics, comedy, and breathtaking moments of risk, all housed within an exquisite, hand-built structure."

CANVAS CITY: DANE STOPS

Dane Stops is a Durban Street Art heavyweight and (in my humble opinion) the best 3D artist in the city.

His use of light and shadow skillfully accentuate perspective and the relationship between the 2D surface and 3D representation. Dane is fascinated by ‘realistic’ representations of form using various objects to take the form of letters. My favorite of these being his octopi G letters which are simply mind blowing!

His influences include Stefan Sagmeister, How & Nosm, Ces, Daim, FX crew, Esk and Phek.

In 2012 Dane took top honors in a Sprite competition which saw him win a trip to America which heightened his profile.

You can connect with Dane via his blog or on Twitter and if you would like to commission a piece you can email him directly.

CANVAS CITY: MOOK LION

MOOK LION is one of Durban’s finest street artists.
Mook Lion Street ArtMy first brush with Mookie’s work was during his Still Free campaign which saw wheat pastes, posters and murals placed throughout the city of Durban. In fact it was Still Free that inspired me start the Canvas City feature on my blog.
Raised in an artistic family Mook started his career as a graffiti artist at the age of 16 and later went on to study fine art at the Durban University of Technology. His art is provocative and beautifully executed. Inspired by artists such as Blu, Faith 47, Jace, Picasso and Van Gogh, Mook can also be likened to the legendary street artist Banksy.
Mook Lion Street ArtI absolutely love his vibrant style and use of colour. It really makes his work stand out and feel alive. You can check out some of his work yourself at the Alliance Franchise, Hope Street in Morningside, Baxter Avenue in Berea, Berea Park, and the Beach front.
Most of the Still Free wheat pastes have disappeared but there are still some surviving in Glenwood, Tollgate and Warwick Junction.
For more info visit his Facebook page www.facebook.com/mooklion or for commissions you can email him on mookie.chapman@gmail.com.
